Folded and unfolded

Here are a few pictures we managed to capture from the Samsung developer conference.

“This might be what we need to finally push the seemingly boring state of smartphones that we’ve had for the last year or two.”

It appears the rumors were true. Samsung not more than 20 minutes ago unveiled its foldable phone with what Samsung calls the Infinity Display. Basically, Samsung had to start from scratch with is AMOLED screen technology. As a result, Samsung has found a flexible adhesive to attach the screen to what would have been the glass. Being foldable Samsung had to pioneer a new screen material as well, this led to a new lamination process to create a material that’s flexible while retaining most of the properties and function of glass.

Samsung also stated that the screen would go into mainstream production very soon. I also want to point out that Samsung said this new screen technology has given them the ability to also create rollable and stretchable screens. This might be what we need to finally push the seemingly boring state of smartphones that we’ve had for the last year or two.

Spec that we know are unfolded the screen will be 7.3 inches. The screen tech has also allowed for the screen to be 45% thinner.
