So CES 2019 is in the books and there was a lot of really cool things that most people will never need or want to use. However, Lenovo’s new Smart Clock isn’t one of those. It’s a device that I think that really has some potential in the lives of millions of people worldwide.
“I think if the price drops to the $39 price range by Black Friday or Christmas 2019 I’ll be picking up a few .”
Let me start off by saying I’m not sure the price of $79 is the right price If you only wanted to have something to wake you up, answer questions and didn’t care about the display the $29 Google home mini or Echo dot works great. If you want a smart display that works as a clock, doesn’t have a camera, the Google home hub has one of the best screens we’ve ever seen in a smart display and the display is 3 inches larger. More importantly though, is the Home Hub can be found pretty regularly on sale for $99, only $20 more than Lenovo’s smart clock. See our review of the Home Hub here. I think though the smart clock is neat, and I think my personal buy-in price is around the $49- $59 price range. Post your thoughts in the comment section below, we’d love to hear what you guys and girls think about the new Smart Clock.
Now let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this thing. The first thing that you need to know is that its made by Lenovo so it’s going to be a quality product. See our comparison of the gen 2 Echo show and the Lenovo smart display here. The next thing to note is the display is a 4 inch IPS panel which means that it should be easy to view from most angles, something that’s probably important in a clock. Another well throughout feature is a USB type A plug on the rear that gives you an easy way to connect and charge your smartphones or watch. Last but certainly not least is the speakers are mounted in the cloth covered rear section and are designed to have the sound bounce off the wall that’s likely to be behind the clock.
Overall I think Lenovo’s Smart Clock a great idea. I think the price is just slightly high in my opinion, but knowing that most of these products go on sale shortly after the release largely due to competition in the market, I think the price will drop to align better with other devices by mid to late summer. I think if the price drops to the $39 price range by Black Friday or Christmas 2019 I’ll be picking up a few for Christmas gifts.
